Hey everyone!

Lets talk about the topic that a lot of singers don’t maintain properly, and that’s vocal health. On many occasions, voice teachers stress hydration, proper rest, maintaining a certain volume level when speaking, etc. when it comes to vocal health. Don’t get me wrong, all of these points are very important. However, I would like to point out that it is imperative that your overall health be in tact when it comes to being able to perform at a high level consistantly. Many singers suffer from frequent colds and bouts with the flu. This can sharply affect the quality of sound, and if servere enough, can stop a singer from performing for prolonged periods of time. If you think that you can’t avoid those “seasonal cold and flu symptoms”, you couldn’t be more incorrect.

If you remember Chemistry class, there is something called the pH scale (potential hydrogen). 1.0 – 6.9 is considered acidic, 7.0 is considered neutral, and 7.1 – 14.0 is alkaline. A good way to remember this is to think in these terms, low = acidic and high = alkaline. For good overall health, you must be more alkaline than acidic! How do you do this? It’s quite simple. What you choose to eat and drink is how you control your bodies pH levels. Introduce more green vegatables into your diet such as greens, various types of lettuce, broccoli, green beans, spinach, etc. Choose to drink more WATER and not soft drinks that are full of sugar and acid. On a side note, I instruct my students not to drink soft drinks, PERIOD! Water should 90% of the time be a singers choice of drink. Think of it like this, water does that same for the inside of your body that it does for the outside of your body. Would you go an entire day without bathing?

Sweet, sugary treats should be in moderation. Sugar is very acidic, and creates a good enviornment for virus to errupt in your body. When craving something sweet, go for fruit which is full of natural sugar that the body can use and is easily broken down. Sucrose, Dextrose, High Fructose Cornsyrup, etc. are all man-made sugars that are in many foods and are horrible in high doses!

This blog was written to inform singers to do your research on this topic! In America, we have such poor eating habits, that in many instances a person must learn how to eat in a healthy manner. We are so busy, lazy, and unhealthy in our thinking that we have learned to live by fast food, artificial sugars, and everything else that henders us from being the healthy human beings that we could be. To get you started on your quest, here are a few quick tips to remember;

1) Alkaline foods keep you healthier, which leads to better vocal health.
2) Being too acidic compromises your immune system, which leads to more colds and bouts with the flu
3) Water should be a singers choice of drink most of the time.
4) Junk foods should be consumed in moderation, and should not be an everyday occurrance.
5) Learn to read lables! You won’t know what you are putting into your body if you don’t do this.
6) DO YOUR RESEARCH! This is your VOICE and your LIFE we are talking about!

Do Better, Live Better.
